As ships and oil rigs grew in size in the 1970s, tugboats had to be developed to support them. Tugs SMIT ROTTERDAM and SMIT LONDON with a capacity of 22,000 hp, 'family ships', were built in 1975 at the shipyard 'De Merwede' in Hardinksveld-Gyssendam (Netherlands).
